Happy cap and gown season, everybody! I can’t believe how fast this year went, lol! Around this time my kitchen turns into a full bakery situation, flour on the counters and frosting everywhere.
How could I possibly say no to a cake with a tiny fondant diploma on top? I can’t! It’s the kind of dessert that makes the whole party stop and stare.
Last year three neighbors brought cakes and we lined them all up on the picnic table. The neighborhood kids voted on their favorite with a jar of candy as the prize.
Since the season is only a couple of short weeks away, I’ve gathered 20 grad cake ideas the whole crowd will love. Don’t fret if frosting isn’t your strong suit! Most of these use simple tricks anyone can pull off.
From heart shaped layers to groovy swirls and even a little Hawaiian flair, there’s something here for every kind of celebration. Under each idea I’ve added the little details you actually want to know, plus a link to the full step-by-step.
Grab your piping bags and let’s get into it, shall we?
GRAD CAKE IDEAS
1. Diploma Scroll Fondant Cake Topper
We’re starting off strong with a fondant diploma scroll sitting right on top. The ribbon detail makes it look store bought, but it’s just rolled fondant and a toothpick for structure. My scrolls always end up a little lopsided somehow.
This one works for any age of graduate, from kindergarten to college. Honestly the wonky ones get more compliments than the straight ones, lol! Even the crooked scrolls get snapped up first at every party.
- The topper that steals the show
- Fondant scroll holds its shape overnight
- Works on any size cake
2. Graduation Cap Chocolate Drip Cake
OMG! Are you guys seeing this drip right now? Dark chocolate cascading over a graduation cap shape is such a mood.
The cap gets carved from two round layers stacked and trimmed at an angle. Warm the ganache slightly before pouring so it moves slow down the sides.
- Drip cake, minimal fuss
- Ganache sets in the fridge in twenty minutes
- Carving takes one sharp knife
3. Money Pull Graduation Cake
Money pull cakes are basically a party trick disguised as dessert. Hidden inside is a hollow center stuffed with rolled bills that spill out when the first slice comes off.
Not that I’m competitive about surprising guests or anything, haha! Everyone at our party screamed when the cash dropped last year. We used a mix of ones and fives just to keep folks guessing.
- The cake with a secret inside
- Hollow center holds a real surprise
- Best served last at the party
4. Red Velvet Heart Shaped Cake
This red velvet one comes shaped like a heart. It is simple to pull off with a heart pan from the craft aisle. I only make red velvet at all because of that cream cheese frosting; it is the whole point for me. If you were hunting for heart cake ideas, this one is a keeper!
Slice it thin because it is rich. It disappears fast anyway, no matter the size. Who doesn’t love a second slice anyway?
- Sweetheart shape, classic flavor
- Cream cheese frosting balances the cocoa
- Heart pan from the craft aisle works great
5. Pastel Heart Cutout Cake
Pastel heart cutouts stacked over each other make this cake look like it belongs in a magazine. Chill each layer before cutting the shapes so the edges stay clean. Skip that step and it turns messy fast.
Are you guys seeing how soft these colors are together? Somebody always ends up sulking about the top piece, haha! We started drawing straws just to keep the peace.
- Layers you can actually see
- Chill layers before cutting shapes
- Pastel gel colors from the baking aisle
6. Heart Shaped Buttercream Ruffle Cake
A heart shaped cake covered entirely in buttercream ruffles looks like fabric, not frosting. It takes patience but zero actual sculpting skill. I burned through three piping bags before mine looked half decent.
A petal tip and a steady hand are the whole secret here. Worth every ruined bag, honestly!
- Ruffles that look like silk
- Petal tip does all the heavy lifting
- No sculpting skill required
7. Retro Wavy Groovy Buttercream Cake
Groovy wavy stripes in buttercream bring back every retro diner vibe at once. The colors marble together differently every time you pipe them, so no two cakes ever match. If you were hunting for groovy cake ideas, this one is a keeper!
This is the batch I make for friends who still own lava lamps, lol! Who doesn’t love a little seventies nostalgia?
- The retro diner effect
- Comb tool creates the wavy lines
- Marbled colors never repeat the same way
8. Groovy Smiley Face Cake
A giant smiley face grinning up from the top of a cake never fails to get a laugh. Piped in bright yellow buttercream, it is basically impossible to look grumpy near this one.
No shame in that, honestly! It disappears faster than any other cake on this list.
- Instant grin factor
- Bright yellow gel color from the pantry
- Round tip pipes the whole face
9. Rainbow Swirl Groovy Cake
Who says a rainbow swirl needs to be complicated? This one layers the dyed batter in a spiral pattern before baking, so the surprise waits inside every slice.
It cuts open to gasps at every party we’ve brought it to. Same!
- Surprise built right into the slice
- Spiral batter layers before baking
- Gel dyes keep colors vivid
10. Tropical Hibiscus Hawaiian Cake
Hibiscus flowers made from gum paste give this cake a whole vacation feeling. The petals dry overnight on a curved form so they hold their shape once they’re placed.
This is one of my favorite hawaii cake ideas because it looks tropical without a single fondant palm tree in sight. Not in my book would that even be necessary!
- Gum paste petals dry overnight
- No airbrush needed for the color
11. Pineapple Shaped Hawaiian Cake
A cake shaped like an actual pineapple always gets a double take at the dessert table. The texture comes from piping little diamond shapes in yellow buttercream across the whole surface. My hand cramps just thinking about all that piping.
Talk about talent! This one takes patience but looks incredible once it is finished.
- Shaped like the real fruit
- Diamond piping pattern covers every inch
- Green fondant leaves finish the top
12. Hawaiian Luau Palm Tree Cake
Little palm trees leaning over a sandy buttercream beach make this cake feel like a real luau. Crushed graham crackers work perfectly as the sand. Nobody guesses it is just cookies.
It barely lasted an hour. Worth every crumb of graham cracker sand, honestly!
- Backyard luau on a plate
- Crushed graham crackers stand in for sand
- Fondant palm trees hold up fine at room temp
13. Spooky Spider Web Cake
A spider web piped across dark chocolate ganache is one of those classic looks that never gets old. Drag a toothpick from the center outward and the web forms itself.
How cute is this?
- The web that pipes itself
- Toothpick drag creates the whole design
- Dark ganache base sets fast in the fridge
14. Melting Ghost Halloween Cake
This melting ghost cake has personality in every single drip. White chocolate ganache pours unevenly over the sides so each ghost face ends up looking a little different. My ghosts always come out looking more surprised than scary, honestly.
Are you guys seeing how creepy these little eyes turned out? My surprised ghosts still get devoured just as fast, lol!
- A ghost with real personality
- Uneven ganache drips make each face unique
- Candy eyes press in while still wet
15. Pumpkin Patch Halloween Sheet Cake
A sheet cake covered in a whole pumpkin patch scene is one of my favorite halloween cake ideas for feeding a crowd. Crushed cookie crumbs make the dirt. Little fondant pumpkins get scattered across the top.
It travels well to school parties since it’s flat and easy to slice. Definitely a fall favorite around here!
- Feeds the whole classroom
- Cookie crumb dirt is easy to fake
- Slices clean for a school party
16. Graduation Cap Cupcake Tower
A tower of cupcakes each topped with a tiny fondant graduation cap solves the serving problem instantly. No slicing, no plates, just grab and go. I found my stand secondhand at a thrift store for basically nothing.
The tower structure comes from that same simple cupcake stand. Best five dollars I ever spent on a party!
- No slicing required
- Secondhand cupcake stand works great
17. Class Photo Graduation Cake
Printing an actual photo onto edible frosting sheet turns any cake into a keepsake. It is one of the more sentimental graduation cake ideas on this whole list. My grandparents cried a little the first time I did this one.
Most grocery store bakeries can print the sheet if you bring the photo ahead of time. Worth the extra errand, every time!
- The keepsake dessert
- Grocery bakery prints the edible sheet
18. Pink Hello Kitty Bow Cake
This pink bow cake is a Hello Kitty fan favorite through and through. The fondant bow sits slightly tilted, which somehow makes it look even cuter.
How sweet is this one? At this point I think she loves the bow more than the cake itself, haha!
- The bow does all the work
- Tilted bow adds instant personality
- Pink buttercream base keeps it simple
19. Hello Kitty Face Fondant Cake
This one leans fully into the character with the whole face sculpted in fondant across the top. Getting the whiskers straight takes a steady hand, but it is forgiving if a couple come out crooked. My first attempt had one whisker way longer than the rest.
One of the classic hello kitty cake ideas that never really goes out of style, honestly. Crooked whiskers and all, it still got demolished in ten minutes!
- Whiskers are the trickiest part
20. School Colors Graduation Sheet Cake
Last but definitely not least, we have a sheet cake decorated in whatever colors the graduate’s school claims as its own. Simple buttercream stripes and a piped mascot make it feel official without much effort.
This is easily the best of the graduation sheet cake ideas here for a big backyard crowd. Sweet, simple and gone within minutes, am I right?
- Built for a big backyard crowd
- School color stripes take one piping bag
