Trying to plan a baby photo session and drowning in a million ideas? Same! There are so many props and poses floating around online that picking just a few feels impossible.
That’s exactly why this list exists. I scrolled through hundreds of pins and kept only the setups that actually look doable in a normal living room, not a studio with a full crew.
Some of these use things you already own, like a knit blanket or a favorite mug turned prop. Others need one cheap item from a craft store, tops.
You don’t need fancy equipment for most of these either. A window with good light and a comfy blanket gets you shockingly far, lol!
Below you’ll find 18 baby photography ideas along with a few nursery and shower ideas mixed in, since those seasons of life tend to overlap anyway.
Save the ones that fit your space and skip the rest. No shame in that!
BABY PHOTOGRAPHY IDEAS
Sleeping Baby Wrapped In Knit Blanket
We’re starting off strong with the sleeping baby wrapped in a knit blanket. So the camera has to be ready before they even close their eyes.
Lay the blanket in a basket or right on a bed near good window light, since that ten minute window closes fast. Blink and it is over! I keep the camera settings preset just in case.
- Naptime window only
- Chunky knit works best
- Ready before the doze hits
Black And White Newborn Portrait
Black and white newborn portraits never go out of style. Strip away the color and suddenly every tiny wrinkle and eyelash becomes the whole story.
It still stops people mid conversation, haha! Guests always ask who took it.
- Timeless over trendy
- No color needed
- Frames beautifully in any hallway
Baby In Flower Basket Photo
A flower basket photo turns any baby into the star of a garden party. How sweet is that? I always tuck a soft cloth under them first so nothing scratches. Silk flowers work just as well as fresh ones anyway, lol! This one needs a second set of hands nearby at all times, since safety beats the cute photo every time.
- Second set of hands required
- Silk flowers work fine
- Line the basket with soft cloth
Sibling Kissing Newborn Baby Photo
Is it really a newborn session without a sibling sneaking in a kiss? Not in my book! This shot melts grandparents every single time.
Get down low so the sibling and baby are on the same level. Patience is the real prop here, not the blanket. A favorite stuffed animal helps keep everyone smiling too!
Baby With Milk Bath Petals
Milk bath photos with floating petals look like something out of a magazine. They are shockingly simple to set up, which surprised me the first time. My go-to is a few tablespoons of milk in warm water for that cloudy look. The petals go in last since they wilt fast. That timing is everything!
- Set up in the tub
- A few tablespoons of milk
- Add petals right before shooting
Nursery Closet With Labeled Bins
Nursery closets get out of hand fast. Labeled bins are the fix nobody warns you about. I sort by category now instead of color like I used to. Onesies, swaddles and burp cloths each get their own bin, so mornings move faster. This is one of those baby organization ideas that pays off long after the newborn stage ends.
- Sort by category not color
- Bins from the craft aisle
- Labels print in minutes
Diaper Caddy With Wooden Dividers
A diaper caddy with wooden dividers turns a chaotic basket into an actual system. Wipes go in one slot, creams in another, diapers stacked by size in the rest.
Who wouldn’t want fewer three am fumbles?
- One caddy, zero digging
- Wooden dividers from a thrift find
- Fits diapers by size
Baby Clothes Sorted By Size
Baby clothes sorted by size saves so much guessing later. My drawers turned into a disaster once the baby hit three months. Clear bins with size labels stack neatly on a closet shelf now. Rotate them in as the baby grows and donate the rest, easy!
- Grow with the stack
- Clear bins stack neatly
- Labels by month not guesswork
Baby In Giant Teacup Prop
OMG! Are you guys seeing this giant teacup prop right now? It looked like something from a storybook the second I saw it. These props rent fairly cheap from local photographers, so buying one outright is not required. Padding inside keeps everything comfortable, which is the whole point!
- Storybook in a single shot
- Rents cheap from local studios
- Padding keeps it safe
Backyard Picnic Baby Photo Session
A backyard picnic session is one of my favorite baby photo shoot ideas because it barely feels staged.
Throw down a gingham blanket, add a tiny basket of fake fruit and let the baby just exist in the grass. Golden hour makes the whole thing glow! A few dandelions scattered nearby add a nice touch too.
- Golden hour does the work
- Gingham blanket from home
- Fake fruit from the craft aisle
Baby Photo With Pet Dog
Who doesn’t love a baby and a dog in the same frame, am I right? It’s basically an instant heart eyes moment!
Keep a favorite treat nearby to hold the dog’s attention toward the camera. Patience and a few extra frames go a long way here.
Floral Wrap Dress Baby Shower
A floral wrap dress is one of the easiest baby shower outfit ideas for the guest of honor. It flatters at every stage and photographs well outdoors. My go to is always simple sandals over anything with a heel. Comfort wins when you are standing for hours greeting guests!
Lace Maternity Dress With Sash
A lace maternity dress with a sash feels a little more formal without going overboard. The sash lets you cinch it wherever feels comfortable that week.
Pumpkin Themed Baby Shower Table
October baby shower ideas practically decorate themselves once pumpkins get involved. Mini pumpkins as centerpieces cost next to nothing at the patch or dollar store. My table always lands on cream and rust linens without any real planning. Somehow it looks styled every single time, lol! A few candles tucked between the pumpkins add extra warmth too.
- Pumpkin patch centerpieces
- Mini pumpkins from the dollar store
- Cream and rust linens tie it together
Baby Dressed As Tiny Chef
Talk about talent! Dressing a baby as a tiny chef with an apron and rolling pin prop is one of the funniest unique baby photoshoot ideas out there. My favorite part is the mini chef hat that seals the whole look. Grandparents ask for extra copies of this one every time, no exceptions!
- Funniest one on the list
- Mini apron and hat set
- Rolling pin prop is optional
Baby Photo With Vintage Typewriter
A vintage typewriter beside a sleeping baby creates such a sweet contrast between old and new. How cute is that combination? It photographs beautifully in black and white too. My local thrift store always has one collecting dust for cheap. Somebody else grabs it first if you wait too long, haha!
- Old meets new in one frame
- Thrift store typewriter find
- Pairs well with black and white edits
Nautical Anchor Baby Shower Cake
Ocean themed baby shower ideas are having a real moment. This nautical anchor cake pulls it all together. My favorite version uses navy and white stripes with a simple anchor topper. No professional baker required for that look! A dollar store cake stand dresses it up even more.
- Navy stripes do the heavy lifting
- Anchor topper from the craft aisle
- Dollar store cake stand upgrade
Toy Bins Labeled With Pictures
Last but definitely not least, toy bins labeled with pictures instead of words. This is one of those toys organization ideas that actually gets used by little hands early on. My own kids started sorting blocks and cars before they could even read. Cleanup turns into a game instead of a chore! That is the whole beauty of it.
- No reading required yet
- Picture labels not word labels
- Turns cleanup into a game
