Happy baking season, you guys! Blue has quietly become my favorite cake color and I’m not even a little sorry about it.
There’s something about that shade next to white frosting that just calms the whole table down, lol!
Every spring my neighbors host a little dessert swap on the porch and last year three of us showed up with something blue without even planning it. We laughed so hard about it that it’s basically tradition now.
Since birthdays and celebrations keep rolling around all year, I’ve gathered 20 adorable ideas the entire family will love. Don’t fret if you’ve never decorated a cake before; most of these use tricks anyone can pull off!
From ombre buttercream to galaxy sprinkles and drippy chocolate, isn’t there always at least one idea here you’ll want to try?
Under each one I’ve added the little details you actually want to know, plus a link to the full step-by-step tutorial.
BLUE CAKE IDEAS
1. Ombre Blue Buttercream Cake
We’re starting off strong with the classic ombre buttercream look. I always assume mine will turn out patchy and it never does! The frosting fades from deep navy at the bottom to almost white at the top.
A basic offset spatula does most of the work here. Blend the colors while the frosting is still soft. Everyone will assume you took a class!
- Beginner friendly and proud of it
- Blends in under ten minutes
- Uses one bowl of frosting total
2. Navy Blue Drip Cake
I’ve made it so many times I could do it half asleep, lol! Warm the ganache slightly before pouring so it slides down slowly instead of pooling. That slow drip is the whole trick. It only takes an extra minute of patience.
- The one that photographs itself
- Ganache sets in the fridge fast
- Works over any cake flavor
3. Blue Watercolor Wedding Cake
How so pretty is this watercolor effect? The blue blends into the white like an actual painting. My attempts never match. No two cakes ever come out the same. A dry brush and a little food coloring gel is honestly the whole trick, lol!
- Looks painted, took ten minutes
- Food coloring gel goes further than liquid
- Great for a tiered wedding order
4. Dusty Blue Floral Cake
Dusty blue is such a soft, grown-up shade and this floral version proves it. It matched her table linens perfectly, which felt like a happy accident! Buttercream roses in muted tones cover the whole side. Even the tiniest blooms take real patience to pipe.
- The muted shade everyone asks about
- Piping tip 104 makes the petals
- Holds its shape in warm weather
5. Blue Galaxy Star Cake
OMG! Are you guys seeing this galaxy cake right now? Dark blue fades into black with edible stars scattered across it. I flick silver luster dust on with a dry brush for that starry effect. It looks like something from a planetarium gift shop, haha!
- Kids beg for this one every year
- Luster dust makes tiny star bursts
- Great for a space themed party
6. Bluey Face Birthday Cake
This bluey face cake has been requested at every toddler party we’ve been to this year. The rounded ears and fringe piped in buttercream nail the look perfectly. Who doesn’t love that?
Bluey cake ideas like this one are all over the party circuit right now and the neighborhood kids absolutely lose it when the candles go on!
- The character every toddler recognizes instantly
- Fondant ears hold their shape overnight
- Works on a basic round cake
7. Bluey Family Cupcake Toppers
These cupcake toppers save the day when a full character cake feels like too much work. I print the whole family and stick them right on top, no fuss. They travel well in a cupcake box too. Drop off duty at the school party just got a lot less scary!
- No sculpting required at all
- Toppers cut from cardstock in minutes
- Reusable for the next party too
8. Bluey Paw Print Cake
Little paw prints stamped across blue frosting make this one ridiculously charming. I use a small round cutter and some brown fondant to get the shape right. This is the cake that shows up at every backyard birthday party this side of the neighborhood lately!
- Simple stamp, huge reaction
- No special tools needed at all
9. Bunny Shaped Coconut Cake
This coconut bunny cake shows up at our Easter table every single year without fail. Shredded coconut gets pressed on while the frosting is still tacky so it sticks everywhere.
Bunny cake ideas do not get much cuter than a round body with two ears sliced from the same cake, am I right?
- The classic Easter shape everyone remembers
- Coconut sticks best on fresh frosting
10. Bunny Ears Easter Cake
Pink fondant ears peeking out of white buttercream make this cake an instant Easter centerpiece. I always sneak the last slice before anyone notices it’s gone! It always ends up as the last slice standing at brunch. No shame in that!
- Brunch table showstopper
- Pairs well with a lemon cake base
11. Carrot Garden Bunny Cake
This carrot garden bunny cake turns the whole dessert table into a little scene. Crushed graham crackers work as the dirt and fondant carrots stick straight up out of it.
His little fingers always leave the carrots crooked. Somehow that’s the best part.
- The one the neighborhood kids help decorate
- Graham crumbs make instant dirt
12. Burgundy Rose Wedding Cake
This burgundy rose cake belongs at the fanciest table in the room. I keep pinning burgundy cake ideas like this one and never get tired of them. Deep cider colored roses piped in buttercream cover the whole tier. It’s not hard to see why these show up on every fall wedding board, is it?
- cider colored and worth the fuss
- Piping tip 125 shapes each rose
- Holds up well through a long reception
13. Burgundy Gold Drip Cake
Gold drips over a burgundy base make this cake look like it belongs at an actual gala. The two colors together read expensive without much extra effort. How cute is this?
Edible gold spray finishes it off. Not that I’m against a little sparkle, haha!
- Gala energy with basic tools
- Gold spray finishes it in seconds
- Ganache drip sets while it chills
14. Hidden Rainbow Surprise Cake
Slice into this one and rainbow layers spill out where nobody expects them. It’s one of those unique birthday cake ideas that turns a normal slice into a whole moment.
The neighborhood kids still talk about the year we did this at a birthday party. Everyone crowded around just to watch the first cut, lol!
- Colored layers bake in the same oven batch
- Cutting reveals the surprise instantly
15. Bookshelf Sculpted Birthday Cake
This bookshelf cake is sculpted to look like tiny stacked novels sitting on a shelf. Fondant spines get painted with little titles and it fools people every time.
Talk about talent! It’s the cake I’d request for myself without a second thought. Even the tiny page edges get a touch of color.
- Fools every guest at the party
- Fondant spines painted with food gel
16. Melting Ice Cream Cake
This melting ice cream cake looks exactly like a scoop sliding right off the cone. Drips of white ganache pour down the sides like it’s about to fall over!
It’s the centerpiece at every summer birthday we’ve thrown lately and it never once actually melts, which still surprises guests. Who doesn’t love that?
- Looks melted, stays perfectly solid
- Waffle cone piece sits right on top
17. Powdered Sugar Snowcap Bundt
Powdered sugar dusted over a bundt cake gives it that quiet snowcap look without any real decorating skill. My lazy Sunday baking days basically live for this trick! It is one of the easiest bundt cake decorating ideas out there. A fine sieve does all the actual work, lol!
- Zero piping skill required
- Fine sieve gives an even dusting
- Cools completely before the sugar goes on
18. Chocolate Glaze Marble Bundt
Chocolate glaze poured over a marbled bundt turns a plain pan into something bakery worthy. The glaze pools in every groove. It drips down the sides just right.
This one never survives past the first afternoon at our house, fair warning!
- Bakery look from a plain pan
- Marble batter swirls with two spoons
19. Floral Lace Pearl Cake
Delicate piped lace and sugar pearls make this cake feel properly elegant. It’s one of my favorite cake ideas for women birthday celebrations because it never feels overly sweet or childish. Same!
A few fresh blooms tucked along the base finish the whole look without any extra fuss. Just a couple placed off to one side does the trick.
- Elegant without trying too hard
- Sugar pearls press on while frosting is soft
20. Black Gold Drip Cake
Last but definitely not least, we have this black and gold drip cake. Deep black ganache with gold drips running through it reads sharp and a little formal. I’ve caught myself eating the gold flakes straight from the bowl more than once, lol! It’s one of the sharpest black and gold cake ideas for men that I’ve come across. My willpower never survives this one, haha!
- Sharp, formal and a little dramatic
- Gold flakes press on last
- Black cocoa gives the deepest color
