20 Office Organization Hacks for Desks, Drawers and Small Spaces

Looking for office organization hacks that give your supplies a proper home? Start with the things crowding your desk, whether that’s notebooks, loose cables or a whole collection of colorful pens.

These ideas include little drawer fixes, wall storage and a few bigger projects.

You can keep things simple or rethink an entire corner. I especially love the ribbon-tied jars and the shelves of colorful binders.

Pick the idea that suits what you actually need to store.

Office organization ideas worth saving

a pegboard full of shelves

We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous pegboard setup. I love the rows of colorful books above the white desk.

The hanging baskets below give notebooks and smaller supplies their own spots.

If you want to try a smaller version, start with a shelf for pen cups and a couple of hooks for your headphones.

gold box and cable openings

How cute is this gold cable box? The sparkling silver-colored rings around the openings are my favorite part.

Separate cords come out through the front rather than gathering in one pile.

For your own version, use a decorative box for unplugged spare cables. Keep powered chargers and power strips in storage designed for electrical use with appropriate ventilation.

clear drawers for colorful tape

I am obsessed with these little rows of patterned tape. The green florals, stripes and leafy designs look so pretty together in the clear drawers.

Group your rolls by color if you like this look. Arrange them in rows with the patterns showing rather than stacking them on top of one another.

a basket below the desktop

Don’t want another organizer sitting on your desk? No problem!

This black divided basket hangs below the edge, holding a coiled cable, a gray container and yellow notepads.

Check the fit around your desk edge before choosing one. I’d place it to the side so it doesn’t take up knee space.

a basket for incoming papers

If you are looking for something simple to start with, this one is for you. A dark basket sits on top of a pale two-door cabinet.

You don’t need an entire wall of organizers to borrow that idea.

Try using a basket like this as your incoming-mail spot. Sort the papers before it fills up.

dividers before the supplies

There’s something so satisfying about this empty drawer, right? The clear trays fit together in a mix of long rectangles and smaller compartments.

Before filling yours, give each tray a job. Long sections could hold pens and scissors while the little ones could keep clips and erasers separate.

a tray for bundled cords

This is another under-desk idea, but this one is all about cables. The long dark tray holds a power strip and bundled cords, with cables running down from the monitor.

I especially like the straps around the spare cables. If you try a similar setup, follow your electrical equipment’s ventilation guidance and avoid tightly coiling cords that carry power.

green boxes and open baskets

This storage wall may just be one of my favorites here. I love the pale green boxes mixed with gray containers and brown baskets.

The plants tucked between them are such a pretty touch.

Try closed boxes for your loose odds and ends, then keep open baskets for things you reach for often.

a cart beside the desk

Running out of room for notebooks? This narrow cream cart sits right beside the desk with notebooks, folders and stationery standing upright on top.

A tissue box sits on the middle tier with more supplies below.

The separate organizers on the top shelf are worth copying. You can give your pens a little section beside your notebooks instead of piling everything together.

headphones on wall hooks

Don’t want your headphones taking over the desktop? Try giving each pair a wall hook like this.

The blue and green headsets hang above a red organizer holding small devices.

For a neater version, you could add separate cable ties for the loose cords.

ribbon-tied supply jars

How adorable are these little bows? The jars separate yellow pencils, dark pens and colorful writing supplies, with a round tag hanging from each neck.

Save this under “office organization hacks easy diy” if you have empty jars to reuse. Tie ribbons around clean jars and add tags for the supplies you actually keep inside.

I’d choose a different ribbon color for each category.

a grid with hanging baskets

This photo shows a shop-style display rather than an office, but the hanging-basket arrangement is worth a look. The black grid holds bottles, packets, prints and a trailing plant.

For an office version, you could replace the products with notebooks and stationery. Keep a couple of clips for reminders or a favorite print.

labels on little drawers

The tiny drawers here are labeled for hardware, not office supplies. Still, I love how clearly each drawer has its own category.

Borrow that approach for paper clips, pushpins and spare pen refills. Short labels on the fronts would help you find the right drawer without opening the whole row.

an unfinished nook

Got a little recess you’re not sure what to do with? This picture shows an unfinished nook with support strips along three walls.

There isn’t a desktop or shelf in place yet.

A fitted work surface could be an option for a space like this. Treat the photo as planning inspiration rather than a building guide.

Have the supports and fixings checked before adding a surface or loading it.

white pockets on a framed board

I am obsessed with this pocket organizer. The white frame and matching pockets look so cute with the zigzag cord across the top.

A notebook fills the right pocket while scissors and pencils sit in the middle. Try keeping your current notebook here instead of letting it disappear under papers on your desk.

a monitor stand with compartments

If you like having everything close by, this one is for you. The black monitor stand has side compartments, a slot holding a tablet and a divided drawer below.

The little sections for clips are my favorite part. Give your smallest supplies their own compartment rather than mixing them in with pens and sticky notes.

upright wrapping paper rolls

The wrapping paper fans are going to love this! Colorful rolls stand upright inside a narrow recess, with two horizontal bars across the front.

If your office doubles as a gift-wrapping space, this is a layout worth considering. Measure your rolls first so the spot you choose can hold them upright.

binders arranged by color

I love these shelves of colorful binders. The greens, blues and purples fill the upper row while pink shades sit together below.

The clear and white binders get their own shelf too.

Try assigning a color to each project or subject. Add readable spine labels so the arrangement is useful as well as pretty.

small supplies in a jar rack

How cute is this little storage rack? Clear containers with white lids hold bright pom-poms and assorted small supplies.

Each container sits on its side in the rack.

If you have a similar rack to repurpose, try sorting one type of supply into each container. I’d add a small label to each lid for anything that’s hard to recognize.

a slim pull-out tech cabinet

Last but definitely not least, we have this narrow cabinet beside the desk. I love how the open pull-out section displays keyboards below a pair of controllers.

This is a bigger storage idea than a pen jar, but it gives you a dedicated spot for extra tech. Leave enough clearance to pull the section out fully if you try a similar setup.
