Looking for college meals that go beyond the same sandwich every day? Think bean-filled potatoes, colorful noodle bowls and quesadillas with plenty of cheese.
These ideas give you a little of everything, including breakfasts for when you’re not in the mood for another bowl of cereal.
You can keep things simple or try something with a few more toppings.
Meal ideas worth saving for your college week
baked potato with beans and cheese
We’re starting off strong with this baked potato piled high with beans and grated cheese. I love how the sauce spills right over the sides. There’s nothing fussy about this plate.
If you like your college meals with fewer toppings to think about, this is a lovely place to start.
tomato spaghetti in one pot
Don’t want a whole lineup of pans on the stove? This one-pot pasta idea is for you.
The pictures show straight spaghetti surrounded by tomatoes, sliced onions, garlic and greens, followed by everything mixed together.
Save this as inspiration for a one-pot spaghetti recipe rather than guessing the liquid amounts from the photo.
black bean quesadilla wedges
How good do these quesadillas look? The browned tortillas have black beans and melted cheese peeking out along the cut edges.
That chopped tomato, red onion and herb topping makes the plate look even better.

I’d keep a little extra topping on the side for scooping onto each wedge.
egg rice with green onions
If you’re looking for a rice bowl without lots of different toppings, go with this egg-and-green-onion combination. The yellow pieces of egg are scattered all through the rice, with little green onion rings on top.
Sometimes this is exactly the kind of simple meal idea you need.

rice bowl with avocado and cucumber
This bowl may just be one of my favorites here. I love the rows of cucumber, avocado and shredded carrot around the flaked fish.
There’s edamame tucked beside the rice too.
Keep the sesame seed topping if you want to follow the same idea. For your own version, canned tuna could be a handy choice.
chunky chickpea salad
Don’t want another bowl of leafy greens? No problem!
This chickpea salad has chopped celery, red onion and herbs mixed through a pale dressing. Some chickpeas are mashed while others are left whole.
Try spooning a similar mixture into a sandwich if you’d rather have something you can pick up.
noodles with colorful toppings
I am obsessed with all the color in this noodle bowl. The purple cabbage, orange carrots and green edamame look so pretty around those white noodles.
There are chopped nuts and a thick tan dressing in the middle too. A peanut dressing would be one option to try with your own bowl.
sheet pan sausage and peppers
If you have an oven available, save this sausage-and-pepper idea. The browned sausage pieces sit among long red and green pepper strips, with sliced onions scattered across the pan.
I’d serve a combination like this in a roll if I wanted to turn it into a sandwich.
tortellini with plenty of greens
Who says pasta salad has to be mostly pasta? This bowl has tortellini tucked between leafy greens and asparagus, with thin cheese shavings on top.
I especially love how much green there is.
Try a similar mix when you want something a little different from a bowl of spaghetti.
lentil and vegetable soup
This is another lovely bowl to save for your dinner plans. You can see lentils, chunks of carrot, celery and dark leafy greens throughout the orange-brown broth.
If you want something alongside it, I’d choose a slice of toast for dipping. No elaborate side dish needed.
bacon egg and cheese muffin
How good is that melted cheese? This breakfast sandwich has bacon and a fried egg tucked inside a golden English muffin, with the filling reaching right out to the edges.
Save this one if you’d rather have a savory breakfast than something sweet.
colorful bowl with cucumber salad
I love the cucumber, tomato and red onion piled along the side of this bowl. The orange-coated pieces sit beside a pale, finely crumbled base, with a spoonful of white sauce in the middle.
For your own take, try cooked chicken over couscous with a cucumber salad and yogurt sauce. That’s a suggested combination rather than an exact recipe for the picture.
rice and bean burrito
Don’t want to eat your rice from a bowl? This burrito gives you another idea.
The cut halves show orange-colored rice, a mashed bean filling and a generous layer of pale sauce.
I’d keep the filling fairly simple like this rather than trying to squeeze every topping into one tortilla.
berry yogurt jar
How cute is this breakfast jar? The white yogurt layers sit between cereal flakes and berries, with blueberries and raspberries piled on top.
You don’t need a special jar to borrow the idea. A bowl with the same layered toppings would be just as lovely.
mushroom and spinach omelet
If you’re looking for a savory breakfast without bread, this one is for you. The open omelet has mushrooms and wilted spinach gathered down the center.
I love that the filling stays visible here. You could serve yours open like this or fold it over before plating.
loaded sweet potato halves
I know the bean potato above looks good, but these sweet potato halves are another favorite. Mostly because of that melted cheese over the black beans and chopped vegetables.
The lime wedges and scattered herbs are worth keeping if you want to follow this serving idea.
creamy pasta with salmon
This is another pasta salad idea, but it’s a little different from the tortellini bowl. The spirals are mixed with pink salmon flakes, green vegetables and red onion in a pale dressing.
I especially love the dill sprigs and lemon wedges. Try serving lemon on the side so you can add it to your liking.
grilled cheese and soup
That cheese stretching between the sandwich halves is so good! The deeply browned bread sits beside a smooth orange soup topped with a pale swirl and green leaves.

For a familiar version of this pairing, choose tomato soup and your favorite grilled cheese. I’d cut the sandwich into halves for dipping.

tofu and vegetable stir-fry
If you like a plate with lots of vegetables, then this one is for you. There’s broccoli, red pepper, carrot and flat green pea pods mixed with browned tofu cubes.
I love the glossy coating over everything. You could serve a similar stir-fry over rice or noodles, depending on what you have.
veggie pita pockets
Last but definitely not least, we have these veggie-filled pita pockets. The cucumber and tomato slices sit above a thick pale spread, with a generous layer of sprouts tucked into the top.
Try hummus as the spread for your own version. It’s a lovely option when you want a break from cooked lunches.
