Looking for exterior house paint color ideas that aren’t just another shade of white? Think sage green trim, deep blue siding or a pretty pink cottage.
There’s plenty to choose from here, including simple neutral combinations if you’d rather keep things understated.
You can change the whole palette or start with your front door. I especially love the green and cream combinations.
Save your favorites, then compare paint samples beside the roof, windows and other details you’re keeping.
House color combinations worth saving
cream walls and sage details
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous cream and sage combination. I love how the green repeats on the door, window frames and little peaked porch.
If you want to go a step further, try matching your planters to the trim like the square ones here. The pink and purple flowers look so pretty beside them.

gray siding and darker trim
Don’t want bright white around every window? No problem!
This gray exterior pairs slightly darker gray-green trim with black window frames. The tall windows are my favorite part.

Try keeping your wall and trim colors close together if you like this quieter combination.
navy and bright white
I am obsessed with this navy exterior. It’s so pretty with the white roofline and golden-brown porch details, especially that big triangle over the front door.
For a similar palette, start with deep blue walls and white trim. Keep any existing brown accents in mind when you choose your blue.
white with black windows
If you are looking for something simple and striking, this one is for you. White walls and porch columns surround black windows and a matching black door.
The little lanterns on either side of the entry tie it all together.
pale gray with white trim
This is a lovely option if your exterior already has lots of gray and taupe around the base. The pale gray siding sits above those varied colors without adding another bold shade.
I’d keep the white window trim here. It gives you a lighter detail without changing the whole palette.
yellow and cream
How pretty is this yellow house? The cream porch railings and window trim look so sweet against the sunny walls.
If you’ve been saving exterior house paint color ideas with a little more color, this is a lovely one to try. Choose a soft yellow sample rather than jumping straight to the brightest shade.
deep olive and black
This olive exterior may just be one of my favorites here. I love the dark roof edges and black window grids against the green walls.
The glowing lights beside the entrance are gorgeous too.

Keep the trim dark if you want to follow this look rather than outlining everything in white.
creamy white and honey brown
Don’t want to go all out with color? Look no further because this creamy white exterior is for you.
The honey-brown garage door and black lantern give it plenty of detail.
I especially love that the pale wall still has all those little marks and lines. This is color inspiration, not a reason to hide every bit of texture.
terracotta and an olive door
I am obsessed with this front door combination. The peachy terracotta walls look so good with olive green, plus those little orange-brown pots are adorable.
Try repeating the door color on its surrounding trim like this. You don’t need a third paint color around the opening.
forest green and charcoal
If you love a darker house, this forest green is worth saving. Charcoal trim follows the windows and roofline while golden-brown porch posts bring in a different shade.
The small upper window has that same brown surround. I’d keep that detail rather than painting every frame dark.
blue shutters and a matching door
How cute is this cottage? The blue shutters and matching front door look gorgeous against the white walls.
Those white window boxes filled with purple flowers make the combination even prettier.

If your house is already white, try this idea with just the door and shutters. There’s no need to change every surface to bring in some color.
soft beige and dark accents
If you’re looking for a neutral exterior without going all white, go with a soft beige like this. The pale garage door and white window borders keep most of the house light, with darker frames and a brown front door.
slate blue and charcoal trim
This is another blue exterior, but it’s a little different from the navy one above. I love the softer slate shade with the charcoal window trim.
The garage door follows the wall color here. Try that same approach if you’d rather not make your garage a completely different color.
ivory and golden-brown accents
I love this ivory exterior with its golden-brown entry. The tall vertical lines on the walls and dark window frames are so pretty together.
If bright white feels like too much for your house, put an ivory sample beside it. Keep the darker roof color in view while you compare them.
deep red and black
The red house fans are going to love this! Instead of white trim, this exterior has black around the windows, doors and roof edges.
I especially love the white flowers beside the deep red walls. Try pale planters or flowers if you want a lighter detail without adding white trim.
muted olive and cream trim
This is actually one of my favorite green combinations on the list. The muted olive walls look lovely with cream window surrounds and the pale details around the porch.
The white flowers repeat across the window boxes and entry pots. You could follow that same simple flower palette rather than adding lots of different colors.
blush pink and white
How sweet is this pale pink house? I love that the color is barely there, with white windows and a light front door.
The black roof, mailbox and porch light keep it from being pink everywhere. Leave those small dark details in the mix if you want a similar look.
gray-green shutters and pale neutrals
Not ready to change every exterior wall? This gray-green shutter gives you a smaller color idea to save.
It sits beside white window trim and brick in reddish and pale gray-beige tones.
Use those existing colors when choosing your shutter samples. You can borrow the palette without trying to copy the brick’s uneven finish.
pale aqua and a teal door
This aqua porch is just too pretty not to save. I love the deeper teal door with the pale blue-green walls and white railings.
The little floral window panels are a lovely extra detail. If you’re trying a similar paint combination, let the door be the brightest shade.
taupe and an off-white window
Last but definitely not least, we have this simple taupe exterior. The off-white window looks lovely against the brown-gray wall, with darker brown along the roof and gutter.
If you prefer an understated palette, try a wall color close to the shades already around your foundation. This one keeps the whole combination in a similar color family.
