Looking for diy patio chairs with a little personality? A bright turquoise frame, patterned cushions and simple slatted seats give you plenty to work with.
These pictures include finished chairs, projects in progress and a few other seating ideas worth a look.
You can keep things simple with a color change or plan a whole new chair. Use these as visual inspiration rather than building instructions.
A photo alone won’t tell you the right joints, weight limits or outdoor suitability.
Patio chair and seating ideas worth saving
angled frame pieces
Starting with the frame? Here, two matching assemblies lie side by side, with long straight edges and diagonal pieces facing opposite directions.
This is a work-in-progress view rather than a finished chair.
I love the simple angular shape. It’s a detail worth saving if you prefer a chair without lots of decorative curves.
low seat with geometric cushions
How cute is this low chair? I love the big gray-and-white patterns on both cushions. The open, stacked base stays visible underneath.
If you want to follow this look, choose matching seat and back cushions rather than mixing prints. A little round table beside it finishes the seating corner.
golden slats and dark supports
This poolside lounger may just be one of my favorite shapes here. The long golden-colored seat and tilted back sit above chunky dark supports.
A gray cushion is being held above it in the picture. I’d keep that simple color choice so the slatted design still gets its moment.
simple armless chair
Don’t want to go all out with decorative details? This armless chair keeps things straightforward with horizontal back slats, a broad seat and open rectangular sides.
I especially love how clearly you can see the grain.

For your own version, a small patterned back cushion could add a little color without covering the whole chair.
woven seat in progress
Here’s a closer look at a seat makeover in progress. Tan cords run across the dark frame, with a few crossing strands and a loose coil resting above.
The seat isn’t finished in this picture, but I love the light cords against that dark outline.
rounded bench supports
This one is a bench rather than a chair, but those chunky round supports are worth a look. The reddish-brown top has a rounded visible end, with curved pieces tucked underneath.
I love the simple gray-and-brown pairing. It’s a seating reference to save if you prefer fewer decorative details.
bright turquoise frame
I am obsessed with this turquoise color. The crossed back and slim arms look so cute against the plain white fence.
There’s no cushion on the exposed seat bars here. For a similar chair makeover, I’d choose a fitted white cushion to keep that bright frame as the main detail.
lime green and stripes
Who says your patio chairs have to match exactly? These two dark-framed chairs pair a plain lime-green seat and back with gray-and-white stripes on the other chair.
Try repeating one color in a nearby planter if you want to bring a mismatched pair together. I’d choose the green.
knotted hanging chair
How gorgeous is all that knotwork? The hanging chair has long patterned bands, little bead details and fringe around its circular seat.
This photo shows an indoor setup, not a verified patio installation. Borrow the decorative look for inspiration, but check outdoor suitability and rated hanging hardware before planning a version outside.
bright red sling seat
If you love a bold color without lots of pattern, this one is for you. A bright red sling stretches across the dark angled frame, with nothing extra covering it.
I’d leave the cushions off this look. The red already gives you plenty to work with.
pale frame and gray cushions
This is such a pretty starting point for diy patio chairs. I love the pale frame with the light gray seat cushion and larger patterned cushion behind it.

Keep the straight arms and simple color pairing if you want a similar look. The little white loops in the back-cushion pattern are enough decoration on their own.
round seats in three colors
These aren’t traditional chairs, but how cute are the low round seats? Each has a ridged tan base topped with a tufted cushion in cream, rust orange or pale green.
I’d borrow that three-color mix for a patio seating group. There’s no need to make every cushion identical.
brown butterfly chair
I love the curved brown seat on this butterfly-style chair. Its pointed upper corners and thin black crossed legs give it such a different shape from the slatted chairs.
It’s pictured indoors, so this isn’t proof that the chair belongs outside. For a patio version, look for a suitable outdoor design with the same silhouette.
hinges and crossing pieces
This picture takes you behind the finished look. Two gold-colored hinges, a long center strip and crossing pieces are visible on the pale assembly.
The final seating shape isn’t shown here. It’s a close-up of a project in progress rather than a finished chair to copy.
navy cushions and black frames
Don’t want bright colors or busy prints? No problem!
These matching black chairs have plain navy seat and back cushions, with a small table tucked between them.
The potted fern is my favorite finishing touch. Try a leafy plant beside your own pair for a similar little seating corner.

a matching slatted side piece
This small square piece sits beside a larger cushioned seat, repeating its brown color and straight lines. I love how the slatted top echoes the nearby seating frame.
It’s a useful side-table reference rather than a confirmed extra seat. You could borrow the matching design for somewhere to put a book or drink.
broad arms and slatted back
If you love a simple slatted chair, save this one for its shape. Broad arms, horizontal back boards and straight bottom rails keep the design nice and simple.
I’d choose a small colorful cushion as the only extra detail. There’s no need to cover up that whole back.
curved arms and a tall back
This chair has such a lovely mix of curves and straight lines. The broad brown arms sweep forward beside a tall back made up of narrow dark slats.
I especially love the uneven outline along the top. If you like this look, keep the chair itself as the feature instead of hiding the back behind a large cushion.
colorful bottle-cap circles
How fun is this seat? Colorful bottle caps form rings across the round surface, while the rest of the chair stays black.
This is a decorative makeover idea rather than a new chair shape. Before trying a similar surface, check that the finished seat has no exposed sharp edges.
navy windowpane pattern
Last but definitely not least, we have this navy-and-white chair makeover in progress. I love the simple grid pattern against the dark curved arms.
The covering is still being held over the back and seat, so this isn’t the finished result. For your own version, keep the grid straight as you plan the fit.
